India's largest mobile operator Airtel starts mobile services in Sri Lanka

AirtelIndia’s largest mobile operator Bharti Airtel Pvt. Ltd announced the launch of its mobile services in Sri Lanka under the Airtel brand. Bharti Airtel plans to invest around 200 million dollar till 2012 in its Sri Lanka operations.They are launching both 2G and 3G services.

Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman and Managing Director of Bharti Airtel said, “We are extremely honoured to present Airtel to Sri Lanka. At Bharti, we have always believed in undertaking business projects that are transformational and have a positive impact on the society at large.”

Bharti Airtel will be competing with four other cellular service operators in Sri Lanka. Tigo (Celtell), Malaysian Dialog Telecom, government-owned Mobitel and Hutchison Telecommunications are the current mobile networks in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka now has 2.7 million fixed access subscribers, 7.9 million mobile and 200,000 internet subscribers.

For first time, Sri Lankan mobile customers will not have to bother with within network and outside network concept as Airtel will offer uniform call charges to any network. The company also offer unique and customer relevant Value Added Services.
