Management consulting for the average business.New times have brought with themselves many changes: political, economic , cultural etc. Many new professions have emerged.

One of them is the consultant for management and organizational development.Having decided to take an advantage of the services of consultants, it is necessary to understand , that:

1) Consultants are not magicians, miracles are not their competence.

2) Consultants are far not needed by all and are far not always needed. Many companies and executives can quite handle all standing problems independently. For average business , the consultant is needed, only if the company has tried to handle a problem independently , but has understood that it has insufficient resources for that.

3) The ability to choose “your” consulting company (consultant), depends on whether you will work well together, and whether there will be a cooperation fruitful for your company.

How do you choose consultants? On what should you pay attention to?

1) During meeting , pay attention to the professional skills of the consultant: whether he is able to listen , whether he hears what he is being told about, whether he is able to ask competent questions, to analyze received information, to offer variants from solutions of the assigned task .

 2) As a rule , the presentation of services of the consultants is accompanied by the use of professional terms. If there are a lot of them, and the consultant does not explain them by his own initiative, not even under your request, then that candidate «on a knockout».

3) The brilliant presentation of the services by consultants is not the keystone to success in the solution of the real problems of the company. It is compulsory you ask for the comments of their clients about the work of the consultants. Do not hesitate to ask questions about the thing that worry you or has guarded you in your actions or for the consultants’ offer. Comments about consultants and their colleagues can be got from the Association of Consultants for Management and Organizational Development.

4) During negotiations, by the comments of clients and the consultants’ articles, try to understand the consultants’ style of work and on how much it suits you and your company. If you feel very uncomfortable with the consultants during talks, or you understand that you are simply being manipulated, then it makes sense to find a different company that is closer to you by their communication style, values, and company culture.
