The original concept of satellite television started over 50 years ago, direct to Home (DTH) satellite receivers were developed in the early 1980’s.

DTH offers better quality picture than cable TV and stereophonic sound effects. It reaches even those places where cable is not available. This service is also providing value-added services that include teletext, dual audio for channels, parental control, electronic programme guide and radio channels.

DTH has also allows for interactive TV services such as movie-on-demand, Internet access, video conferencing and e-mail. If you want to record your favorite programs you can get a free DVR (digital video recorder) receiver.

Main disadvantage of DTH is fading of the signal due to rains. Heavy rains may result into outage for a few minutes in the DTH signal.

DTH service provider in India:

Dishtv is India’s first direct to home (DTH) entertainment service.

DD Direct Plus is a free Direct to Home service in India, owned by parent company Doordarshan. DD DIRECT PLUS was launched in December 16, 2004.

Sun TV was launched in 1992 as the first private channel in South India. Today it has 20 televisions channels in the four South Indian languages. Recently Sun TV launched a DTH satellite television service entitled SUN Direct on 7th December 2007.

Tata sky also another private DTH service provider in India.

Reliance Communications (RCom) and Bharti get ready for a launch direct to home service.
