Chocolate contains lots of chemicals. One particular component called theobromine, which is a toxic compound in chocolate. Different types of chocolate contain different amounts of theobromine. Higher quality chocolate tends to contain more theobromine than lower quality chocolate. Theobromine levels are higher in dark chocolates than in milk chocolates.
Veterinarians warn that animals must never be feed on chocolates because theobromine (toxin) compound in the chocolates is known to affect the hearts, kidneys and central nervous system of animals.
The toxin does not harm us because humans can break down and excrete theobromine much more efficiently than animals. The amount of theobromine found in chocolate is small enough that chocolate can be safely consumed by humans in large quantities.
