Wind Energy or Wind power

Wind power is the conversion of wind energy into electricity. It is a green power source that is one of the cleanest, most economical, renewable, unlimited, abundant and fastest growing source of energy on the planet. Wind has been the fastest growing energy technology in the world more than a decade. India has an enviable position has No.1 in Asia and 4Th largest in the world among wind power predicting countries.

Turbines used in wind farms for commercial production of electric power are usually three-bladed and pointed into the wind by computer controlled motors. Wind turbines can be separated into two types based by the axis in which the turbine rotates.

1. Horizontal-axis wind turbines(HAWT)
2. Vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWT)

Benefits or advantages of Wind Energy

1. Wind turbines use the renewable power from wind i.e. wind energy is renewable.
2. Wind mills have no affect on rainfall.
3. Wind energy generates no pollution.
4. Wind energy does not produce any greenhouse gases or other toxic pollutants.
5. Wind energy systems are one of the lowest priced renewable energy technologies available in the world.

Main disadvantages of wind energy are good wind sites and noise pollution. Good wind sites are often located in remote locations. It increases costs of transferring electricity to city. Turning of the wind turbine blades create noise pollution.

The Indian wind energy companies (Suzlon) already accounts for eight percent of the lucrative wind energy sector in China. Nine wind farms across the country are supplied by Suzlon. Suzlon is in the process of developing Asia’s largest wind park or wind energy program in Dhule, Maharshtra (INDIA) with a capacity over 1000 MW. MW stands for a megawatt which is a million watts, sufficient power to light 10,000 100-watt bulbs.
